Siege of Orgrimmar: Disco Style Pt3

Tips:
It has been a few months since we hit the streets of Orgrimmar and it is a bit overdue but here is my Discipline Priest's Guide to healing 10 man Siege of Orgrimmar (for previous parts see: Pt1 and Pt2 ).

Malkorok

Halo is awesome here, use it on cooldown and I find alternating my position between the middle and the outer edge provides the best throughput due to it healing for more the further you are from the heal target and if it crits I can easily get 1.5m per cast.

Spirit Shell before the pull and halo on the pull. Spirit Shell again before Blood Rage and use Power Word: Barrier when all are stacked up for Blood Rage.

Power Word: Shield also gets a lot of use here and is especially good for puddle soakers and Penance is very good for fast restoration of the shield to anyone with a red or missing shield.

Atonement is almost worthless on the fight and should only be used when everyone has a green shield and Spirit Shell is on cooldown. Because I run at low spirit levels, I have mana issues on this fight and therefore will use Hymn of Hope early and hope to get a second one in if needed (which usually doesn't happen as my raid has some good DPS.

Talent wise I run with Divine Insight because I am using Power Word: Shield a lot. For the level 90 talent, as I mentioned at the start Halo is the best choice.

Spoils of Pandaria

As with all adds based fights, Twist of Fate is a very good because of Atonement and therefore you should spend most (if not all) of the fight smiting your enemies!

I also love Halo because adds and allies are often spread around the room especially as it will be boosted by Twist of Fate.

Other useful tips are to use Spirit Shell when Massive Mogu appear and to use Power Word: Shield when people get Set to Blow especially if you have Body and Soul.

Thok the Bloodthirsty

As Halo was your awesome level 90 talent on Makorok, Divine Star is the goto option on Thok as the raid is all stacked up often and as long as you stand back from the group it will hit all of the raid twice which not only heals them all for massive amounts AND puts a big fat juicy Divine Aegis on them too!

As an added bonus, if you get spell locked, you can still use Divine Star

Eventually you will get to the point where you can only cast instant spells and at that point as a Disco priest that means spamming Power Word: Shield like it was ICC all over again!

Save your Spirit Shell for when your paladin uses Devotion Aura and use Inner Focus just as it fades as you are immune to silence for 5 seconds when using it, this will give you a full 11 seconds of immunity to interrupt/silence and will allow you to get the maximum out of Spirit Shell when your raid needs it most.

Sunday Screenshot #31

This week's screenshot was a really tough decision to make as while Evlyxx, completed the questline from Firelands and became the owner of, Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa's Rest, my warlock also achieved Challenge Conqueror: Gold and the right to wear the awesome looking transmog set you get as a reward.

While both were big goals and both needed help from my awesome guild I opted for my moment of the week to be the legendary questline that I started during Cataclysm but because of my position as a healer never got the chance to complete in the right content and because of a bit of slacking on my part has taken 16 months into Mists to finish. That said I still think it is worthy of at least a picture here even if not the headline one!

While the whole guild helped me achieve these things I have to give a special mention to the 5 guys that assisted me in getting the Challenge Mode achievement because we did it with a really badly composed group of pally tank, monk/druid healer 2 warlocks and a rogue! We lacked many buffs including heroism, spell haste and critical strike so min/maxing was definitely not there. It does prove though that a badly composed group can hit gold on all dungeons. So /salute to our tank, Illumination Xiulin and Falcain (our healers), Yamï and Kojiro my DPS partners.

Have you got a screenshot of a special moment in your Azerothian life? Or maybe you just have a screenshot that made you laugh, smile or cry, if so, I'd love to see it so please leave link in the comments.

If you're into running old content for fun and like having a laugh with crazy wow addicts and are looking for a new home come give Exhumed on Shadowsong EU a look. In addition to our social side we have 2 raid teams and an RBG team.

Our 'flex' team has killed Garrosh now and is always looking for more players, especially healers, to help push it over to normal raiding. Our PVP team is going from strength to strength and is always looking for exceptional players as well (currently ranked #1 no Shadowsong EU).

Our "progression" team is now moving into heroic content after killing Garrosh a few times but is not currently recruiting.

Cheesing Meters Wastes Time

I have been looking at ways we are wasting time in raids lately and trying to trim off a minute here and there that will hopefully give us 15-20 minutes extra per raid.

The first step was the change to loot system from master loot /roll to using group loot which certainly I feel is a big contributor to the "wasted" time.

My new target is DPS. I don't give a care about individual DPS, HPS or TPS as long as bosses die quickly.
FACT: The faster a boss dies the better YOUR DPS is because the longer a fight goes on the less % of that fight you spent in the perfect DPS situation where all your trinkets and weapon enchants proc'd during heroism while you blew your cooldowns.
Some people love to cheese the meters and make themselves look good to people that only focus on the DPS meters. A great way is to cleave on a council type fight even if technically that makes a DPS loss on the kill target.

Council fights come in 3 flavours a shared HP pool (Stone Guardians in MSV), each boss having their own independent HP pool (Council of Elders in ToT) and each boss having an HP pool that gets healed in one of the other bosses dies (Paragons of the Klaxxi in SoO).

In examples 1 and 2 cleave is godly, you should multi-dot and cleave as the bosses die much faster. There may be times when you need to burn through one of them for a short period of time but mostly cleave (not AoE) is good. The last example is one where cleave and multi-dotting is not godly. Sure if some light cleave actually boosts your single target DPS it should be done (thinking warlock rain of fire to generate embers for chaos bolts) but things like Chain Lightning, Sweeping Strikes and Blade Flurry should be avoided because it lowers your DPS on the focus target.

As an example I'll look at our kill of the Paragons this week where we failed big time:
  1. Rik’kal the Dissector - 44m HP
  2. Skeer the Bloodseeker - 61m HP
  3. Korven the Prime - 61m HP
  4. Hisek the Swarmkeeper - 54m HP
  5. Xaril the Poisoned Mind - 54m HP
  6. Kaz’tik the Manipulator - 54m HP
  7. Iyyokuk the Lucid - 54m HP
  8. Ka’roz the Locust - 44m HP
  9. Kil’ruk the Wind-Reaver - 61m HP
That gives the bosses a total of 487m HP, the Bloods have 6m, Amber and kunchong 7m each and we kill one of each during the fight meaning we should do a toital of 507m damage if there is zero cleave which will never happen because tanks need to AoE tank, we have legendary cloaks and the genuine DPS boosting cleave. I'll assume that this is worth 15% of our total damage so overall we should be hitting around 583m damage on the Paragons. However our damage was MUCH higher:

In fact we did 20% more damage than we needed to. The issue can be seen when looking at the damage done to Karoz, Iyyokuk, Hissek and Kilruk who despite having a combined HP of 213m took a total of 392m damage to kill. Karoz took almot 3x his HP in damage!

Dealing this much extra damage means a MINIMUM of 20% extra time taken to kill a boss and places more strain on the healer team as mana does begin to run out and people take mopre damage from bosses. If all fights we're 20% shorter and people avoided the damage of doing dumb stuff to get an extra chaos bolt in we could 2 heal many more fights which would mean even faster kills and less time having to raid.

Shorter fights will also mean you do more DPS without having to cheat the meters and that makes you and your raid team better raiders.

Sunday Screenshot #30

The last few weeks I have spent a lot of time leveling new alts hordeside and helping friends do the same. This has meant I have spent a fair bit of time in Upper Blackrock Spire (or UBRS). Today's screenshot, which is the first of the year) has been taken from one of the iconic bosses in there.

I love this place as it hold so many memories of my early days in WoW hoping that I could get a group to do the Father Flame event so I could get my Devout shoulders. Sadly because of a certain Leeroy Jenkins not many liked to do that...

Got a screenshot of a favourite old instance? Or maybe you just have a screenshot that made you laugh, smile or cry, if so, I'd love to see it so please leave link in the comments.

How To: Use Caps Lock For Your Keybinds

How often do you use your CAPS LOCK key? I realised I NEVER used mine. If I type a CAPITAL letter I simply hold down the SHIFT key instead.

So when I realised this I thought "WTF? I can use this as a modifier key for my keybinds" then I realised that it would make my typing lookstupid. So I engaged my Google Fu and discovered there is a way of remapping individual keys on the keyboard.

My keybinds are weird so I won't go in depth here BUT I use SHIFT and CTRL as modifiers often and ALT very rarely. I also find CTRL is a bit awkward to use often. CAPS LOCK is a lot easier to hit with my pinky finger (which I use to activate my modifier keys). So I decided to remap CAPS LOCK to be a 2nd CTRL key.

On Windows this is really simple but you do need to be a bit brave as it involves modifying your registry. If you use a MAC I'm sorry but you're out of luck!

This can be achieved 2 ways. The first is to open up the registry and add/modify the registry key manually. If you're not sure ho to do this there is a second, much easier way which is to create a .reg file. Below is the text that you need to put in the .reg file (if you know how to add/modify the reg keys this will give you the info you need to make the change manually)

CHANGE CAPS LOCK TO CONTROL

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,1d,00,3a,00,00,00,00,00
CHANGE CAPS LOCK TO SHIFT

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,2b,00,3a,00,00,00,00,00
CHANGE CAPS LOCK TO ALT

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,38,00,3a,00,00,00,00,00
RESET CAPS LOCK TO CAPS LOCK

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=-

To create the .reg file all you need to do is press the Windows key and 'r' at the same time, then type 'notepad' and click on 'OK'. With notepad now open copy the text from one of the boxes above and paste it into the notepad window, select 'File', 'Save As...', change the 'Save as type' dropdown to 'All Files (*.*)' and type in a file name (I suggest ChangeCapsToXXX.reg).

Once saved, close Notepad and go to the location you saved the file and open the file. This will give you a warning message:

All you need to do is press Yes and once you have rebooted your PC your caps lock key will now be the key you chose!

If you're brave and trust me, I have the files for download here. Please run the zip and the unzipped files through your anti-virus program first, if it warns you there is a virus, let me know  and do NOT open it further.

If you found this tip useful, please feel free to share it with your friends and guildies!

Siege of Orgrimmar: Disco Style Pt2

Tips:
It has been a few months since we hit the streets of Orgrimmar and it is a bit overdue but here is part 2 of my Discipline Priest's Guide to healing 10 man Siege of Orgrimmar (see here for Pt1).

Galakras:
I tend to run  Twist of Fate because of the number of adds to smite means a lot of time in the buff zone and Halo because the raid tends to be spread out and as well as healing your raid it will hot the adds and any friendly NPCs that have taken damage which helps pad out the meters and make other healers cry ;p

My team sends everyone up the first tower to clear it real fast but if your team doesn't as a priest you should be assigned to tower healing as a single mass dispel will cover everyone who goes up on the first tower (slap your raid leader if he refuses to send a priest up) and levitate will help negate the fall damage on the way down (and save your butt if you're foolish enough to get knocked off!.

On the pull use Spirit Shell to mitigate the raid wide damage from the first set of adds that come down the hill.

I also like to use Leap of Faith as when the Demo is incoming I move to the top of the left hill near the tower door, allowing me to heal the raid, smite the demo and save the tank the long rungiving him more of a head start on threat as we move up the tower before the DPS.

The damage after Galakras has landed rises quickly and you'll need as many cooldowns as you can through out. If you use Spirit Shell first, you may get a second one out near the end of the fight.

Iron Juggernaut:
I tend to run with Divine Insight as there are no adds here and I use shields a lot on this fight especially on the bomb soaker. I also run with Halo as my raid often gets spread all over the battlefield on this fight. If your raid is a bit more disciplined Cascade is the best option.

Just before Siege Mode getting out a Spirit Shell gives awesome reults other than that it is a simple Smite/Atonement fight.

Dark Shaman:
My guild uses the 3 tank strategy on this one so my set up depends if I am assigned to the main group (who tank Hadromm and the wolves up the alley to the Drag) or the Kadris 3 man group in the main area infron of Gromash Hold. Regardless of which group I'm in I spend most of the fight using Atonement and as we're hugged up I use Divine Star and as I don't spam PW: Shield I use Power Infusion

If I'm in the 3 man Kadris group in the main arena I run with Halo as things are a lot more spread out and it is good for wiping out the Foul Slime and Divine Insight as I tend to spam PW: Shield a bit more on the 3 of us. Also I switch out my Glyph of Holy Fire for the Glyph of Binding Heal as there are times when it can get a bit hairy.

General Nazgrim:
I spend most of the fight Atonement healing and there a re loads of adds so I take Twist of Fate as my level 75 talent as the uptime of the 15% healing buff is very high.

Because the raid is spread out all over the room and the adds are also randomly placed I always opt for Halo and I position myself in the middle of the room so I never have to move too far to get the max range from most people.

Also, I aim to be stacking Spirit Shell when the boss hits 65 rage so that when he hits 70 rage and casts War Song maximum damage is mitigated and if you can hit a Halo just after it hits your raid will be in great shape.

Siege of Orgrimmar: Disco Style Pt1

Tips:
It has been a few months since we hit the streets of Orgrimmar and it is a bit overdue but here is part 1 of my four part Discipline Priest's Guide to healing 10 man Siege of Orgrimmar.

Immerseus:
Surprisingly this is a lot more disc friendly than I and many others anticipated. Due to the size of the room we 3 heal this fight which also helps deal with the ever increasing number of friendly adds near the end of the fight.

I tend to run Twist of Fate here because the boss spends a lot of time at low HP and so does them friendly adds that need healing.healing adds and Halo because the room is huge and the adds start a fair distance away which means you can heal for around 200k and also hit the nasties for around that too.

During the boss phase simply atonement heal while avoid the Swirl and the Sha Puddles and build up Evangelism.

During the adds phase stand close to the boss and position yourself near a big stack of adds, early on this will most likely be many unfriendly adds and if you're lucky 3 friendly adds. When the adds become targetable unleash Inner Focus, Archangel and Halo. If you let a friendly one escape, you can void shift one per fight and also Leap of Faith one to you every 2-3 waves.

You can also assist with the DPS by using Void Tendrils and smiting if there are no more healing ones.

Fallen Protectors:
I tend to run  Twist of Fate because of the number of adds to smite means a lot of time in the buff zone and Divine Star because my raid team tends to hug up.

Dispel bane and use mass dispel to clear a few of the raid. PW:Shield Garrote/Sha Sear/Inferno Strike victims and use Spirit Shell when Sun hits 70% and 37% and Power Word: Barrier inside her bubble and as you'll be spending a lot of time atonement healing, you should try to time your Archangel with the Desperate Measure phases of all three bosses as this is the most healing intensive time.

Norushen:
I tend to run  Twist of Fate because of the number of adds to smite means a lot of time in the buff zone and Halo because it makes you super fast in clearing the phased realm out.

I always grab the first orb (along with one of our tanks) allowing me to clear my Corruption as it buffs not only our healing, but your DPS which in turn means Atonement heals for more!

As soon as you enter the phased realm hit halo. This will do a ton of healing to the 3 friendly NPCs as well as a fair chunk to the add. From there I simply smite my way to victory and unless I get the debuff, if the NPCs get the debuff I find my atonement keeps them up anyway and get out in 20-30 seconds.

Once out of the realm you should still kill the adds as these will stack up if you don't help the DPS clear them.As raid damage is high throughout the fight I use Spirit Shell on cooldown.

Sha of  Pride:
I tend to run  Twist of Fate because of the increased damage taken by the raid once the boss hits 30% and Divine Star because we're stacked up and if timed well can also hit the adds from Self Reflection.

Use Spirit Shell after the prison phase as this will reduce the swelling pride damage and also just before the Sha of Pride hits 30% so that when he casts Unleashed to kill Norushen much of the damage is mitigated.

I also like to switch out my Glyph of Holy Fire to Glyph of Purify as I don't need the range and I may potentially have to spend the whole fight dispelling!

How I Build a Raid Team?

Putting together a raid team is no easy task, the first thing to decide is not who are your tanks, healers and DPS, but rather how many of each you want to carry. My 10 man raid team has 3 tanks, 3 healers, 3 mêlée, 3 ranged and 3 off-healers that was an "easy" choice, knowing who to fill those roles with was not so easy as there are a number of things to consider.

The first thing to consider is that my raid team is a progression focused group in a social guild. We raid 6 hours a week over 2 nights so we're not the type to switch people in on fights or demand a super high attendance. However, we do expect full effort on fights both in and out of game.

Some spots were obvious choices as they are long time raiders with the guild, some players are just too awesome to leave out and sometimes that has meant juggling the team to accommodate all the people worthy. As an example I have 3 awesome healers I raid with meaning I am 1 of 4 healers in a 10 man that is a bit excessive but we get round that by using rotation and I accept the fact that I can't heal all the time so get lumped into the off -healer group.

Another factor to consider is availability, I have crappy shifts that prevent me raiding for 3 weeks straight every 8 weeks, one of my ranged DPS can only raid every other week and one of my healers has seemingly erratic shifts which at times causes issues if it clashes with one of my 3 weeks and a random absence by another healer. Thankfully despite all these challenges, our raid team has got off the blocks every week this expansion and things look to be staying that way as we are now a quarter of the way through the the second year of the expansion.

Performance is another key factor in deciding who you use to fill those spots and here performance becomes very subjective, DPS players always assume that the only thing that maters are the raw DPS output figures. In an ideal world this would be true and in many top end guilds that ideal is a reality. However, I prefer to take dependable people who can get the job done, by which I mean I prefer to take someone that does competitive DPS and does things right than a DPS king that has bad positional sense, stands in the fire, dies too quickly and consumes the one battle res I have available, doesn't listen on TS/Vent/Mumble, doesn't read strats, shows up late (or worse, not at all) and in general causes me a crap ton of stress.

The last thing I consider is possibly the most important which is their personality. I want to raid with people I can depend on. I need them to be there when the team needs them to be there, someone that promises to be there then doesn't show up is not someone I want to raid with, I need them to do the job assigned to them, I need them to fit in with the other members of the team. That doesn't mean I have to consider everyone I raid with to be my best friend (although that is always a goal) but I do need to be able to respect them as a person and a player. Thankfully everyone I have on my raid team scores VERY highly on this at the minute.

If you raid lead or have a say in who is in the your raid team, how do you choose your team? If you're not able to choose your raid team mates, how would you choose them if you could? I'd love to know your thoughts.

Sunday Screenshot #29

I know it has been a while but I have finally perfected another of my stratpics, this time for Paragons of the Klaxxi to add to the previous ones for Siegemaster Blackfuse, Thok and Malkorok.

If you wish to use these, please feel free to do so but please do not claim them as your own.
Got a screenshot of something odd that happened when you attempted something the game designers hadn't thought of? Or maybe you just have a screenshot that made you laugh, if so, I'd love to it so please leave link in the comments.

If you're into running old content for fun and like having a laugh with crazy wow addicts and are looking for a new home come give Exhumed on Shadowsong EU a look. In addition to our social side we have 2 raid teams and an RBG team.

The flex team has killed Garrosh and is always looking for more players to help kick us over to normal raiding. We are working on our PVP team as well (currently ranked #1 no Shadowsong EU).

Sunday Screenshot #28

Well Christmas is upon us again. So I thought I'd treat you all to a Christmas Card as my weekly screenshot.

I'd like to apologise for the lack of written content I have posted recently but I'm going through a busy phase in real life and in game I'm very busy with guild acivities. This has also aligned badly with a bit of writer's block, which so soon after BlizzCon is a bit puzzling, maybe it has something to do with Hearthstone activity.

Anyway, I am still playing WoW, so hopefully this nasty phase will end soon.

One of the many things I hate in PVP is the hunter's monkey pet, not because it hurts more than others but the god forsaken noise it makes while beating on me! This week I encountered a hunter that not only had a monkey pet, but focused on me the whole freaking battleground and I spent 20 mminutes with that bloody noise ringing in my ears. To make matters worse, when he unleashed Stampede, every pet was that bloody monkey!

Can World PVP Ever Work?

Once again, Blizzard are trying to make world pvp happen and during BlizzCon they even admitted they have Rose Tinted Goggles over the Southshore vs Tarren Mill world PVP battles that used to happen in Vanilla and have for the past 8 years tried in vain to make it happen.
  • Vanilla patch 1.12 gave us silithyst which gave the faction to get 200 returns of silithyst dust a zone wide buff to Cenarion Circle rep including inside the AQ raids;
  • TBC gave us buffs for a faction winning the PVP objective;
  • Wrath removed the zone buff model and went for a world PVP zone, Wintergrasp with a battle occurring every 2hours 30 minutes the faction controlling the zone got access to a raid instance that dropped tier and PVP loot as well as phased mobs being visible ONLY to that faction;
  • Catclysm stuck with the world PVP theme and added daily quests as well as a raid as the reward for the controlling faction, the faction that controlled the zone got more dailies;
  • Mists removed the world PVP zone and put in world bosses that were faction taggable as well as some PVP dailies in daily questing zones;
  • Warlords of Draenor: Gives us a world PVP zone again...
On PVE servers none of these has brought about World PVP and in my opinion Blizzard have failed so many times you'd think they would have realised that it wasn't ever gonna work and they should learn from the wise words of Murozond from End Time, "To repeat the same action and expect different results is madness."

But why does their attempts fail to encourage us? Is it because players simply  don't want to mix PVP into their PVP? Is it because the payers are now a little bit older and therefore more pushed for time? Either way people want PVP in the game in the form of battlegrounds, arenas and duels. The whole world PVP thing really doesn't seem to fit in with the casual friendly version of WoW we play today and I wish Blizz would stop wasting development time on such things and actually focus on balancing PVP and fixing the whole PVP gear issue as it is now impossible to quest in PVP gearas a healer because my offensive spells are about 10% of what they are in PVE gear (admittedly this is 30 ilevels higher too) and exactly the same as my level 80 TWINK priest.

I can't think of a solution to the issue beyond having no PVP gear and when entering a BG or Arena giving players a choice from a few sets of class armour with different focus on stats (e.g. a haste set, amastery set and a crit set) but that the raises the question of how to reward PVPers.

Do you want world PVP? If so what type of world PVP would you like? Do you want incentives to encourage world PVP? If so, what would you like as the incentive?

Sunday Screenshot #26

Firstly I'd like to apol.ogise for my lack of activity during the past 2 weeks but some thieving scumbags decided 2 weeks ago to steal the phone cables connecting my village to the local telephone exchange (some 8kms away) and it took it lot longer than it ought to to have them replaced. As I was also on leave from work I was left beached with no Internet until the day before my vacation ended /boo.

I realised during this time how dependent I am on the Internet during this outage and even buying a mobile dongle didn't help as I was getting a lowly 44kb/s download speed which apparently is too low to get a connection to Battle.net let alone run WoW and as I was having 5 minute waits for web pages I didn't bother even trying to much aside keep up with my guild forum.

Anyway, this post was meant to go up the day my Internet died and I am only now able to get it out so Sunday Screenshot on a Wednesday it is!

During one of our guild "mount farm" nights we decided to add ZG into the mix and found that 5 manning a level 85 boss at level 90 can cause the game to do some odd things.

Got a screenshot of something odd that happened when you attempted something the game designers hadn't thought of? Or maybe you just have a screenshot that made you laugh, if so, I'd love to it so please leave link in the comments.

About the Author

By day I'm an IT Server analyst for a major telecoms compnay in the UK and I've been playing World of Warcraft since November 2005 when a pair of colleagues bullied me into playing! I have evolved into a raider (summer 2006), an auction house wheeler dealer (2007), a guild officer (2007), an altoholic (2008), a raid leader (2008), a Warcraft blogger (2010) and a PVPer (2012)

My main has, and always will be Evlyxx, a priest and I love to heal. I started as Holy in vanilla, dabbled with the shadow side during the middle part of Burning Crusade, before returning to Holy but I have been mostly Discipline since mid-Wrath.
