Project Titan

titans

I have a burning ambition to do something challenging. Some may call it stupid, others pointless but it is something that I want to do but I need help from 9 others to achieve. There is no time limit on getting the team together to do it though. You're probably all thinking what the hell is he on about. OK so you may not, but regardless.

I'm going to share this dream with you today, because my dear friends, the dream I have is to become Evlyxx, Herald of the Titans (in game not in real life). Now the main issue I face with achieving this is that this became a Feat of Strength in Cataclysm and with the account wide nature of achievements, it is now possible to get it on your main regardless of their level. However, while it is still obtainable there is a catch; all raid members have to be level 80. The second obstacle for me is that I have 11 characters on my home realm and really don't fancy reopening my second account.

The good news is that with cross realm grouping now possible for everything except the current raiding tier, the 9 people I take with me won't need to be on the same server and for me that is awesome as I have a priest at 74 that could do the job for me, the only hitch is that he is a troll and most of my likely companions are Alliance, I think. But either way that is no major hurdle that can't be fixed by throwing a few pounds into the Blizzard coffers. So what is the criteria for getting the Feat of Strength? The official achievement reads:
"Defeat Algalon the Observer in 10-player mode at level 80 without anyone in the raid wearing any equipment with an item level higher than is available in 10-player Ulduar."
In reality this means that your armour items must be ilvl 226 (or less) and weapons/off hands must be ilvl 232 (or less). They don't need to be from Ulduar, although to max the stats Ulduar 25 is the best place to farm gear. However, you can use the craftable items, Justice Point gear. For farming armour Ulduar 10, the Icecrown Citadel 5 mans and Trial of the Champion 5 man heroic. For weapons, you will need to farm Trial of the Crusader 10, Onyxia 10 and the Icecrown Citadel 5 man heroics. My research has also given me some useful information on attempting this in Mists:
  • The key is no longer required to open the door;
  • The 1 hour time limit has been removed;
  • Epic gems are allowed;
  • Reforging is allowed
  • Cataclysm leg enchants are allowed;
  • Mists of Pandaria profession enchants are allowed;
  • Savage Armor Kits are allowed;
  • Cataclysm consumables (flasks/potions/food/Adventurer's Journals) are allowed;
  • Mist of Pandaria talents/ability/stat changes make the fight less challenging;
DPS output needs to be over 5k which is a very easy benchmark to reach. I have read rumours of people 5 manning the achievement and seen people selling this as a boost to upto 3 characters which suggests it can be easily 7 manned by level 80s in the qualifying gear.

The hard part looks to be getting the people and the gear.

So what am I looking for to pull off this crazy stunt? Firstly I need 9 volunteers, prepared to work on gearing up (see above) and working as a team to achieve the end result of defeating Algalon the Observer in the required gear. Those 9 volunteers will need to bring:
  • 2 tanks;
  • 2 healers;
  • 2/3 melee;
  • 2/3 ranged;
I'll be bringing a disc priest and would like 2 different healers of any other type. I'd also like different classes in the tanking role, other than that classes are not that important as long as we can cover all the buffs and hero/bloodlust.

Ideally I'd like people to play their main class. They will need to lock their XP for the duration of the project which will include geaing up phase. My preference is to do this Hordeside but I can re-faction my Troll disc priest if that is easier for the rest of the team.

I'll be setting no deadlines until the team has been gathered as that is something that the group needs to decide. So now the ball is in your hands, if you're interested please reply below and use the template below. For contact info please use the character you play most not the one to be used in this project (unless they are the same ofc):

Class:
Priest
Role:
Healer
Faction:
Horde (can re-faction)
Contact info
(char/realm):
Evlyxx Shadowsong EU

Lastly this is an EU project so sadly you folks with a US account are not able to assist me, blame Blizzard for that one :(

About the Author

By day I'm an IT Server analyst for a major telecoms compnay in the UK and I've been playing World of Warcraft since November 2005 when a pair of colleagues bullied me into playing! I have evolved into a raider (summer 2006), an auction house wheeler dealer (2007), a guild officer (2007), an altoholic (2008), a raid leader (2008), a Warcraft blogger (2010) and a PVPer (2012)

My main has, and always will be Evlyxx, a priest and I love to heal. I started as Holy in vanilla, dabbled with the shadow side during the middle part of Burning Crusade, before returning to Holy but I have been mostly Discipline since mid-Wrath.

  1. I'd be interested in doing this in principle, however there's more of an issue than just the logistics of getting 10 level 80s together.

    I killed Algalon in TOC gear, with a handful of ICC items, and it was still pretty damn hard. Doing it in 226/232 gear is not going to be an easy task. It's tantamount to killing Heroic Madness or Heroic Ragnaros without any nerfs.

    1. It isn't easy but I hear from the rapevine this isn't as hard as it was due to the natural power increase that occurs through the stat changes and talent system overhaul that balances classes only for the 90 level cap. It still is unlikely to be a walk in the park though and only attempting it will reveal the true difficulty.

      Good to see my guild forum post has gathered a few interested parties already.

  2. How does Heirloom gear stack up against item 226 @ level 80? is it viable?

    1. While it IS allowable it doesn't stack very well as it is only the equivalent of a dungeon blue which in Wrath was at best 200, some 19 iLevels lower than the limit so a lot of budgeted stats are lost using them.

    2. I would be VERY interested to help out - I have a level 60 Druid I can level (DPS or Healer, which ever is needed)I also have a 67 DK - both are on Alliance I am affraid, but if the majority are on Horde I don't mind switching one.

    3. The project IS hordeside now :( Things are moving a little slower than I hoped but a druid would be awesome cos they are so flexible.

      We're on Defias Brotherhood EU, drop by the website http://reexhumed.shivtr.com/
