Nev from Auction House Addict has created a community project for the gold makers among us 20 Days of Gold Making. You can find a list of all of the participants in this blog post at AH addict. The question I am covering today is:
Which market has made you the most gold over the years?
I have been actively generating gold all my WoW life and initially that started as simply auctioning off things I collected on my adventures through the game and that covered most of the first 4 years. I had become interested in the potential for making gold in Vanilla after hearing a podcast where the guy had been able to buy a friend an epic mount simply by controlling the herb and alchemy market by buying everything and listing it at high and varied price on a few characters. I tried to emulate this but soon discovered that I had too little gold and that my alts naming convention gave the game away that it was the same person (all my toons ended in with the rather obvious "yxx" and became discouraged rather quickly and left the manipulation to the richer folks.
I tried my hand at inscription and while I made a over 50k gold during glyphmas, and while that is a long way short of some of the figures I saw around the internet at the time for the effort I put in, considering teh economy of the server I'm on was (and continues to be) very strange compared to other servers I am active on it wasn't a bad result, but other than that brief window glyphs have been bad for me in terms of gold per hour simply because there are so many people playing that market on Shadowsong EU.
I have tried the enchanting and alchemy markets and while they provide a steady income it doesn't set the world on fire, again because of the high numbers of people doing the same on my server, and as most results in leather working and blacksmithing are dependant on rare patterns which my rogue doesn't get access to as I don't raid on it while the recipes are current.
So while I have dabbled in most markets and focused on them all from time to time the one that has been consistently the big hitter for me has been jewelcrafting. It started in Wrath when I was making 4-5 thousand gold per day profit doing the old saronite shuffle. Learning this enabled me to continue through Cataclysm and into Mists with the shuffle where it continues to provide an excellent return on investment, although now there are so many people doing this it is harder to get the returns that I got in the past, but to be fair I have neglected my jewelcrafter a bit so far this expansion but as the perfect gems seem to be better sellers than the blue quality raw gems that neglect isn't so bad as I have all the recipes needed and teh returns on teh ghost iron shuffle are high but it does require frequently buying out all teh ore on teh AH which never seems to rise above 30g per stack.
